The AI has to discover your website, usually through a search index like Bing or Google and your sitemap.
Read it
It has to be able to read the words on your pages: your services, your towns, your phone number. If it can't read them, it can't repeat them.
Verify it
It double-checks you're real and trustworthy: matching business listings, clear business details, and other websites mentioning you.
Why most businesses fail step 2 without knowing it
Your website looks fine in a browser, and Google can read it, so Search Console shows no problems. But ChatGPT search draws on Bing's index and OpenAI's crawlers, Perplexity runs its own crawler, and Claude uses a third-party search index plus its own fetchers. None of them run JavaScript the way a browser does. If your site depends on JavaScript to show its words, those AI tools see a blank page.

Why can't ChatGPT read my website?+
Most AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript. If your site is built on a JavaScript framework or a modern page builder that renders content in the browser, the crawler receives an empty page with only a title. Google renders JavaScript, so this problem is invisible in Google Search Console. The fix is server-side rendering or prerendered static HTML for every important page.

No tool can guarantee what an AI model says. The score measures whether AI engines can read and verify your site, which is the prerequisite. Being recommended also depends on consistent business listings, third-party mentions and answer-first content.
